Romaani peategelaseks on ajalooline isik Hermann Karnau, kes oli Hitleri Berliini punkri valvur ning lääneliitlaste jaoks füüreri surma esimene tunnistaja. Selle umbes kolmekümneaastase mehe jumalaks on hääl. 1940. aasta septembris koostab Hermann Karnau plaani, kuidas süstemaatiliselt uurida inimhääle fenomeni. Ta muutub fanaatiliseks kogujaks, salvestades rindel surevate sõdurite viimseid hääli. Lõpuks saab Karnaust natsionaalsotsialistide teenistuses julmi eksperimente teostav inimhääle manipulaator. Raamatu tegevus hüppab 1945. aastast 1992. aasta suvesse, mil salvestatud hääled elustavad taas mineviku.
