Inglise kuningas Richard I (1158-1199) ja Egiptuse sultaniks tõusnud Salah ad-Din Jusuf ibn Aijub (1138-1193), keda lääs tunneb Saladini nime all, kuuluvad keskaja suurimate ajalooliste tegelaste hulka. Kolmanda ristisõja lahinguväljad olid areeniks, millel kohtusid need kaks rüütliajastu uhket esindajat, kaks ühtmoodi karismaatilist meest, kellele tuhanded järgnesid märtrisurma.
