„Mäeküla piimameest“ on ilmumise hetkest ehk 1916. aastast nimetatud Eduard Vilde meistriteoseks. Romaani just lõpetanud lugeja peab tunnistama, et tekst on mõrvarlikult hea. Iga ajastu on Vilde teose surunud oma Prokrustese sängi, aga just see näitabki romaani kestmist üle ajastute, teksti igikestvat aktuaalsust, mis vajab aina uuesti mõtestamist.
