Eestlaste muistse vabadusvõitluse ühe episoodi, eesti maleva hiilgava võidu ristirüütlite üle Ümera lahingus, pani Mait Metsanurk romaani kujul kirja aastaks 1934. Hiljem on ta seda nii uute ilmsikstulnud faktide valguses kui ka kirjanikukogemuse täienedes veidi ümbergi töötanud.
“Ümera jõel” on üle aegade kestnud ja mitmetele lugejapõlvkondadele hästi tuntud teos, kus on taas ellu äratatud eesti ajaloolise romaani parimad traditsioonid, millele panid aluse juba Ed. Bornhöhe ja A. Saal.
