Ameerika treenib väesalka, mis peaks rakendama uut lahingu meetodit: viia sõdurid lahinguplatsile helikopteritega. 14. novembril 1965. jõuab kätte kaua oodatud lahingu päev. Kolonelleitnant Hal Moore (Mel Gibson) maandub oma meestega "Surmaoru" nime all tuntud kohal. Koheselt avastavad nad, et on ümber piiratud rohkem kui 2000 vietnaamlasega nende 400 sõduri vastu. Järgneb Vietnaami sõja esimene ja üks verisemaid kokkupõrkeid vastaspoolte vahel. Film on tõsielul põhinev sõjadraama. Käsikiri on kirjutatud Harold G. Moore’i ja Joseph L. Galloway raamatu "We Were Soldiers Once... and Young" alusel, kus nad kirjutavad oma mäletustest selle lahingu kohta. Filmi Lavastaja-stsenarist on Randall Wallace’i ("Kartmatu").
