TUTVUSTUS
Puulaid Hiiumaal on see paik, kus kord elasid inimesed, kes käesoleva teose autorile olid kaudseiks eeskujudeks romaanis esinevate tegelaste kirjanduslikul kujutamisel. Ka geograafiliselt on Puulaid teoses äratuntav. See pole kaugel Aino Kallase loomingupaigast Kassaril. Elmar Õun tuli Hiiumaale suvitajana. Saare elanikud ja nende probleemid said talle lähedaseks. Tema esimene teos sellel ainel, romaan «Unustatud naised», auhinnati kirjastuse Loodus romaanivõistlusel aastal 1938.
Käesolevas teoses pöördub kirjanik veel kord tagasi Hiiu saarele, mille randadel kohtuvad meri ja maa, avavesi ja põllumuld ning inimesed nende taustal.
