See oli 1757. aastal, kui Zürichi literaat Johann Jakob Bodmer toimetas trükki äsjaavastatud käsikirja »Chriemhildens Rache und die Klage», milles jutustati vägilase Siegfriedi reetlikust hukkamisest ja Kriemhildi verisest kättemaksust alatu tapatöö eest. Nii sai tuntuks Euroopa kirjanduse üks olulisemaid eepilisi teoseid, mis on kõrvutatav Homerose eeposte, «Rolandi laulu» ja «Kalevalaga».
Kahjuks on «Nibelungide laulu» autor ja päritolu tänini lõplikult lahendamata.
