327 lk. 1977.a.Peategelane Siegfried on mehine, aus ja väärikas ning esindab saksa inimese ideaali. Siegfried aitab Guntheril taltsutada Brünhildi, kes on Islandi kuninga tütar. Siegfried jätab enda kätte Islandi kuningatütre vöö ja sõrmuse ning kingib need oma naisele Kriemhildile, kes on Guntheri õde. Seejärel puhkeb tüli Brünhildi ja Kriemhildi vahel, sest Brünhild peab Kriemhildi ja Siegfriedi oma alamateks. Pärast selgub, et Brünhildi mehe Guntheri asemel on temalt neitsilikkuse võtnud "ori" Siegfried. See on naise jaoks talumatu solvang ja ta laseb Guntheri vasallil Tronje Hagenil Siegfriedi tappa. Tronje Hagenist saab eepose teine peakangelane, vastandudes negatiivsena Siegfriedi ideaalile.
