Komöödia "Nõmmekingsepad" on romaani "Seitsme venna" kõrval kõige ulatuslikum ja värskemana püsinud teos Kivi loomingus. Ses näidendis avastas Kivi oma peamise ala - realistlik-humoristliku rahvaelu kujutuse võime. See teos ilmus eelharjutusena ja sissejuhatusena ta suurromaanile, mis on jäänud Soomes siiamaale ületamatuks. Kuid ühtlasi sai Kivi selle komöödiaga üldse soome rahvusliku näitekirjanduse rajajaks.
