Johann Wolfgang Goethe kiriromaanil «Noore Wertheri kannatused» puudub väline tegevusliin. Sündmused on edasi antud läbi Wertheri kirjade oma vennale Wilhemile.
Sündmustik algab Wertheri kolimisega fiktiivsesse külla nimega Wahlheim. Seal vaimustub noor ja emotsionaalne Werther nii küla ümbritseva looduse ilust kui seal elavate talupoegade lihtsast olekust. Ühel peol kohtab Werther Lottet – noort ja ilusat naist, kes pärast ema varajast surma on sunnitud hoolitsema oma väiksemate õdede-vendade eest- ning armub temasse silmapilkselt. Kuid Lotte on juba kihlatud ning nii peab nende vahekord jääma sõpruseks.
