Romaan «Oblomov» on Ivan Gontšarovi kunstilise loomingu tippsaavutus. «Oblomovis» häbimärgistab ta suure kunstilise väljendusjõuga pärisorjust, mis kirjaniku arvates läks paratamatult vastu oma lõpule, paljastab maa-aadli mahajäämust ning tardumust ja näitab meile «oblomovlust» kui vene elu suurimat pahet ning häda (peale viinajoomise muidugi). Maksim Gorki hindas romaani kui vene kirjanduse üht silmapaistvamat teost. Gontšarovi romaanil oli suur tähtsus vene haritlaskonna progressiivsete ringide võitluses pärisorjusliku korra avstu, teos etendas suurt osa vene kriitilise realismi arengus.
