Tutvustus
Ameerika kirjaniku Richard Yatesi (1926 – 1992) romaani peategelasteks on lahutatud ema ja tema kaks tütart. Suure südamesoojusega kujutab autor ema jõupingutusi, et tütardele head kooliharidust anda. Vanem tütar Sarah paistab silma oma ilu ja noorem, Emily, terava mõistuse ja teadmishimuga. Neiul õnnestub taotleda stipendium kolledžisse ja saada hea haridus. Sarah seevastu leiab toreda mehe ja sünnitab kolm poega. Kuidas aga kulgeb õdede elu edaspidi, kui Sarah'l haihtub abieluõnn ja Emily pettub üha uuesti oma arvukates kallimates. Kuigi side õdede vahel jääb kestma, kasvab kaugus nende vahel järk-järgult, kuni traagiline sündmus nad taas fookusesse paiskab.
