472 lk. 2005. a. Hommikul helistas Pavel Stepanovile ta asetäitja Tšernov, kes teatas, et kaubanduskeskuse ehitusplatsilt on leitud lihttöölise Murkini laip. Kui kena päeva algus! Firma Ehitustehnoloogiad juht Stepanov mõistis, et asja tuleb klaarida peale miilitsameeste veel ka tellijatega, need aga on tõsised mehed. Tegemist on ju ikkagi surnukehaga… Peale selle korraldavad kohalikud aktivistid protestidemonstratsioone kaubanduskeskuse ehitamise vastu, sest see toimuvat justkui pühas paigas… Kui miilitsamehed tuvastasid, et Murkin hukkus õnnetusjuhtumi tagajärjel, ei jäänud Stepanov seda uskuma. Ta leidis kadunu asjade hulgast vihiku, mille ülestähendused tõendasid, et hukkunud lihttööline oli… väljapressija.
