Dennis Lehane'i romaanil põhinev lugu kolmest sõbrast Jimmyst, Sean'ist ja Dave'ist, kes kasvasid koos üles. 25 aastat hiljem on Jimmy tütar mõrvatud ja lugu asub uurima politsei uurijana töötav Sean. Lugu võtab aga uue suuna, kui leitakse esimene kahtlusalune.
Tim Robbins sai filmi eest ka parima meeskõrvalosa Oscari ja Sean Penn meespeaosalise Oscari. Lisaks sellele sai film veel 2 kuldgloobust ja Cannes'i festivalilt ka Kuldse Karika lavastajale Clint Eastwood'ile.
