Lugu mehest (Colin Firth), kellest sai kuningas George VI, kuninganna Elizabeth II isa. Pärast seda, kui tema vend Edward (Guy Pearce) troonist loobub, tõuseb George, hüüdnimega Bertie, vastu tahtmist Ühendatud kuningriigi etteotsa. Bertie, kes kannatab kogelemise all ning keda ei peeta sugugi vääriliseks kuningaks, saab abi Lionel Logue’ilt (Geoffrey Rush), ebatavaliste võtetega kõneterapeudilt. Ootamatute kõnetehnikate ja ebatõenäolise sõpruse abil leiab Bertie kindla hääle ning viib riigi söakalt sõtta.
