Visnapuu alustas selle kirjutamist Saksamaal, kodumaa kaotuse, pagulaselu traagika ja okupeeritud Eesti saatuse muremõtete varjutuses. Sündmused algavad noorusmaaga ning jõuavad vaimsete otsingute kirjelduse ja „Siuru“ kevade ning Saksa okupatsiooni aja kaudu välja Vabadussõjani.
