Inglise naiskirjaniku Daphne Du Maurier (1907-1989) nimi pole eesti lugejale päris tundmatu, ehkki ennekõike teatakse teda kui režissöör Alfred Hitchcocki kuulsate ekraniseeringute "Linnud" ning "Rebecca" kirjandusliku algallika loojat.
Käesolev romaan, mille maaliliseks fooniks on vana Prantsuse loss ja tegevusajaks aasta 1955, on üks autori tuntumaid ja tõlgitumaid teoseid (samuti ekraniseeritud) ning seda võiks lühidalt nimetada teisikuromaaniks.
Ent põneva hoogsa süžee arendamine pole autorile omaette eesmärk; romaanil on ka psühholoogilist usutavust ning sügavust; peategelase teiseks meheks olemisega kaasneb kogu aeg vastutusemotiiv – uute, võõraste tegude ja neist tulenevate tagajärgede suhtes.
