Viimased 60 aastat on tulnukas nimega Paul (Seth Rogen) veetnud aega ülisalajases sõjaväebaasis. Teadmata põhjustel otsustab targutav kosmoserändur ühel päeval sealt põgeneda ning kasutab selleks esimest mööduvat sõidukit. Selleks on renditud autosuvila, milles rändavad kaks ulmefilmidest, -koomiksitest ja -romaanidest läbi imbunud nohikut Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) ja Clive Gollings (Nick Frost), kes tunnevad pärast esmasest shokist ülesaamist siirast rõõmu ootamatu kolmanda astme lähikontakti üle.
Nende kannul on föderaalagendid ja nende poolt kogemata röövitud noore naise (Kristen Wiig) fanaatiline isa. Kaks lootusetut nohikut aitavad kauget külalist, kes võib omakorda teha neist galaktika kangelased.
