Viktor Samoilovi uurimus on esimene katse anda ülevaade revolutsioonieelsest eesti teatrielust Peterburis/Petrogradis, alates esimesest eestikeelsest etendusest 1873 kuni oktoobrini 1917. Sealsete eesti seltside harrastus- ja poolkutseliste näitetruppide tegevus, mis loomuliku koostisosana kuulub eesti teatri ajalukku, mõjutas oma tegevuse algaastail märgatavalt ka kodumaist teatritegevust.
Kronoloogilises järjestuses antud teatrielu üldpilti ja silmapaistvamate lavastajate-näitlejate loominguteed täiendavad põhjalikud lisad jooksva mängukava, näidendite ja isikunimede registritega.
