Torude lõikamisel tekivad ebatasased lõike servad ja toru võib olla muljutud. Liitmike paigaldamine sellisele torule võib põhjustada lekkeid ja väga kulukaid remonditöid.
Kalibraatorid ümardavad toru ja lõikavad faasi toru sisemisele ja välimisele servale. Igal kalibraatori suurusel on mõlemal küljel spetsiaalsed sisemised ja välised lõikurid.
Ühe korraga puhastatakse servad ja antakse torule täiuslikult ümmargune ristlõige mis võimaldab toru ühtlaselt liitmiku lõpuni suruda ja tagada tihe ühendus.
