Tutvustus
XII–XIV sajandil vallutasid Rootsi ja Taani kuningad käsikäes Saksa Orduga endale Rooma paavsti heakskiidul Läänemere idakaldal uusi alasid. Ometi teab Eesti lugeja nende sõjakäikude sündmustikust vähem kui Vahemere maade ristisõdadest. Põhja-Euroopas sõdinud ristirüütlite vallutusretked olid aga märksa edukamad.
Kõik need uued nähtused ja institutsioonid vallutatud aladel, mis seostuvad Lääne-Euroopa keskajaga – linnad, kirikud, tsunftid, linnused, mõisad, feodaalne seadusandlus ja katoliiklus –, on sündinud just nende sõdade tagajärjel.
