Polina Žerebtsova sündis ja kasvas Groznõis. Tema päevikud katavad ta lapsepõlve ja noorukiiga, mille sisse jäid kolm Tšetšeeni sõda. Õpingud, esimene armumine, tülid vanematega – kõik see, mis on tuttav igale noorele – olid Polina elus kõrvuti varjendites redutamise, nälja, hävingu ja viletsusega.

Vene nimega tüdruk moslemi kombel seotud pearätiga elas pidevalt kahe tule vahel. Ta nägi surma, võitles elu ja endaksjäämise eest. Pärast Groznõist lahkumist lõpetas Polina kõrgkooli ning sai ajakirjanike liidu ja PEN-klubi liikmeks. Praegu elab ta Soomes.
