Kohtunik Di on hiljutati edutatud pealinna kohtu eesistujaks ning ta saadetakse incognito Kantonisse lahendama kadunud keiserliku tsensori juhtumit. Jiao Tai, Tao Gani ning pimeda tütarlapse Lan Li abil lahendab Di tervelt kolm juhtumit: tsensori kadumise ning ka smaragdtantsijatari ja salaarmastajate mõistatuse.
Robert Hans van Gulik (1910–1967) oli Hollandi diplomaatiline esindaja Hiinas ja Jaapanis. Kohtunik Di Renjie oli reaalne isik, üks Tangi dünastia tuntumaid riigimehi, kes lahendas palju keerulisi juhtumeid.
