Ulmekirjanduse uue laine literatuursel harjal supernoovana kirjandusse tulnud Roger Zelazny (1937–1995) «Surnute saar» (Isle of the Dead; 1969) on üks ta esimestest romaanidest, milles on selgelt näha noore vihase mehe loomingu ehedamaid tahke, teos on pärit perioodist, kui Zelazny võitis ühe ulmeauhinna teise järel (16 auhinda, nende seas 6 Hugot ja 3 Nebulat) ning kirjutas oma parimad romaanid nagu «Valguse isand» ja «Amberi üheksa printsi».
