Richard Hildreth (1807-1865) elas 1834-1836 kaks aastat Lõuna istandustes, kus tutvus orjade raske olukorraga. Oma tähelepanekute põhjal kirjutas ta jutustuse «Ori ehk Archy Moore´i kirjad», mis ilmus 1836. a. See oli esimene teos ameerika ilukirjanduses, kus teravalt paljastati Lõunas valitsevat orjapidamissüsteemi. Hiljem töötas autor jutustuse ümber romaaniks «Valge ori», mis ilmus 1852. a. peaaegu samal aastal Harriet Beecher-Stowe´ «Onu Tomi onnikesega»
