Saksa väed on okupeerinud Budapesti ja Ungari juutide küüditamine surmalaagritesse on alanud. 9. juulil saabub linna noor mees Rootsist, kes võtab endale eemärgiks kaitsta sellise saatuse eest "nii palju inimesi kui võimalik". Oma missiooni täitmiseks on tema käsutuses vaid Rootsi diplomaatiline pass ja Ameerika rahaline toetus. Ometi õnnestub tal päästa kindlast surmast enam kui 100 000 juuti, enne kui ta jaanuaris 1945. a. Punaarmee kätte vangi langeb. Sellest päevast peale on ta teadmata kadunud.
