Pärast II. MS Brandenburgi väravad jäid poolitatud Berliinis Saksa DV poolel ja olid taastatud 1956. aastal, sellest ajast teda "kaunistas" nõuka lipp. Siis kui 1961. aastal ida poolt alustati seina ehitusega, Brandenburgi väravad jäid kahe seina (põhi- ja väikse) vahele, nii et Lääne-Berliinist polnud juurdepääsu kuid ka Ida-Berliini poolt samuti polnud. Juurdepääs oli ainult välisturistidele (põhiliselt nõuka liidust) piirivalve spetsiaalse läbikäigu kaudu.
