Zündapp oli suur Saksa mootorrattatootja, mille asutas 1917. aastal Nürnbergis Fritz Neumeyer koos Friedrich Krupp AG ja tööpinkide tootja Thieliga nime all " Zünd er- und App aratebau GmbH", et toota detonaatoreid (Zünder- und Apparatebau on saksa keeles süüteseadmete ja aparaatide ehitus/kokkupanek). 1919. aastal, kui relvaosade nõudlus pärast Esimest maailmasõda vähenes, sai Neumeyerist ettevõtte ainuomanik ja kaks aastat hiljem mitmekesistas ta tegevust mootorrataste ehitusega. Esimene Zündappi mootorratas oli mudel Z22 aastast 1921 ... 1951. aastal andis Zündapp välja oma viimase raske mootorratta mudeli, kuid ühe kuulsaima: KS601 ("roheline elevant") 598 cm3 kahesilindrilise mootoriga.
