Romaani tegevus toimub Narvas. Maalt linna siirduva Villem Luige uudistavate silmadega antakse meile pilt Kreenholmist, vabrikute võimsusest ja tööliskasarmute läpatanud õhkkonnast. Villem tuleb linna, lootes siin paremat elu leida. Algul tunneb ta rõõmugi vabrikus töötamisest, sest on siin ju kõik nii suurejooneline ning võimas. Kuid lähenevad aastad. Kergemat elu ei tule, raudsed käed aga pigistavad Villemist tilk tilga järel välja kõik elumahlad. Villemist jääb järele armetu vare, kes ei suuda iseenesegi eest hoolitseda, rääkimata siis perekonnast. Häda sunnil satub tänavale Villemi naine Juuli, Villem ise aga kukutab enese viimast jõudu kokku võttes aknast surnuks.
