Novell "Reekviem armastusele" valmis aastal 1896 ja ilmus samal aastal ka trükis. Mitmeski mõttes on tegu ühe von Saari meisterlikuma novelliga. Von Saar ise kirjutas kirjanduskriitik Moritz Neckerile raamatu lõpetamise järel järgmist: "Tunnistan, et pean seda õnnestunud tööks, ehhki, nagu peaaegu alati, leiaks ka üht-teist laita. Igal juhul olin sie endale modelliks. [---] Enamikku minu novellidest hakatakse kahjuks tõeliselt nautima alles pärast minu surma - kui minu teoseid siis üldse veel nauditakse."
