Juba mõnda aega on läänes eksisteerinud nn. dokumentromaan. Salme Ekbaumi uus teos on esimene läbinisti selles tehnikas töö eesti kirjanduses. Siin saab oma kirjandusliku läbivalgustuse Kanada eestlaskonda vapustanud konflikt kodumaaga suhtlemise probleemi taustal. Kuna vaatluste keskpunktis on autori mina-isik, annab see teosele subjektiivse värvingu, kuid loob samas psühholoogiliselt sügavasti läbituntud atmosfääri.
