Walt Whitman (1819–1892) oli Ameerika mõjukaim luuletaja ja esseist ning üks esimesi ilmakuulsaid vabavärsi meistreid. Oma aja kohta erakordselt liberaalsete vaadetega poeedi esmakordselt 1855. aastal ilmunud "Rohulehed" peegeldas toona anonüümseks jäänud autori veendumusi mõjudes oma sensuaalsuses paljudele šokeerivalt.
Whitman jätkas kogumiku täiendamist elu lõpuni. Viimane, 1892. aastal avaldatud versioon – tuntud ka kui surivoodi väljaanne – sisaldas peaaegu 400 luuletust ning oli tõeline ood vabadusele ja individualismile. Poeet, kelle elutöö sai oma lõpliku vormi autori eluõhtul, jättis surres maha teose, mida peetakse õigustatult Ameerika rahvuseeposeks.
