Chicago Ülikooli professor Marshall Sahlins on viimaste aastate mõjukamaid Ameerika antropolooge, kelle peamine huvi on olnud Polüneesia etnoloogia ja ajalugu. Tema menukas ja novaatorlik esseekogu «Saared ajaloos» (1985) käsitleb Hawaii, Fidži ja Uus-Meremaa saarte ajaloo murrangulisi hetki, mis on tingitud nende ajaloo lõikumisest Euroopa ajalooga. Sahlins ühendab leidlikult ajalooteaduse ja antropoloogia võimalused, avades sel moel tänini mõistatuslikuks jäänud sündmusi, nagu kapten Cooki esialgne jumalustamine ja hilisem tapmine havailaste poolt 1778. aastal.
