20-aastasena surnud Raymond Radiguet, 20. sajandi prantsuse kirjanduse imelaps, kirjutas oma esimese romaani "Saatan ihus" 18-aastasena. Esmailmumisel tekitas see raamat kirjandusringkondades skandaale ja kõmu, kuid on tänapäeval tunnistatud prantsuse kirjanduse üheks kroonijuveeliks. Loo tegevus toimub Esimese maailmasõja ajal, mis on paljude koolipoiste silmis vaid "neli aastat koolivaheaega". Lütseumis õppiv verinoor Francois armub noorde abielunaisesse Marthe'i, kelle mees Jacques on rindel. Tuline armastus on kurt kõige ümbritseva suhtes ega arvesta mingeid tõkkeid või moraalinorme. Aga väga kiiresti avaldub ses ühenduses ka Francois' lapselik julmus ja kohusetruudusetus ning selgub poisikese suutmatus täita täiskasvanud mehe rolli. Sõda lõpeb ja lõpetab ka need "neli aastat koolivaheaega". Marthe sureb, andes elu Francois' pojale, kellest saab lohutus ja elu mõte sõjast naasnud Jacques'ile.
