Avondale'i Mõistatustemuuseumi rajaja professor P. T. Avondale leitakse tapetuna oma kirjutuslaua tagant. Mehe kuklasse on torgatud tema enda paberinuga ning tapetu ees laual on poolelijäänud sudoku. Teoreetilise matemaatika instituudi teadur ja sudokulahendamise meister Katie McDonald jõudis vaid mõni päev varem tagasi lapsepõlvekoju Granville´i linnakeses, et päästa oma õpetaja muuseum oksjonilepanemisest, kuna selle asemele kavatsetakse ehitada säästukeskus. Ootamatult on Kate muuseumi kuraator, professori järgmise hoolealuse – neljateistaastase ärajooksnud poisikese – õpetaja ning ainus kogu linnas, kellel on mõistust ja otsustavust professori tapja tabada.
