Film põhineb tõestisündinud sündmustel. Tegevus toimub Hiina-Jaapani sõja ajal 1937 aastal. Peategelane, Ameerika ärimees John Miller (Christian Bale), suundub katoliku kirikusse Nankingis, et aidata kohalikul preestril valmistuda matusteks. Saabumisel leiab ta end ainsa mehena kloostrielanike ja lõbumaja prostituutide seas keset Jaapani armee sissetungi. Sattununa sellisesse olukorda, püüab ta päästa õnnetuid naisi keset sõjaõudusi...
