Romaanile «Sõda ja rahu» kuulub L. Tolstoi kirjanduslikus pärandis keskne koht. Tolstoi töötas romaani kallal kuus aastat. Algselt plaanis Tolstoi triloogiat dekabristidest, millest «Sõda ja rahu» (esialgse pealkirjaga «Lõpp hea, kõik hea») oleks moodustanud vaid esimese osa, käsitledes 1812. aasta sündmusi. 1825. ja 1856. a. sündmusi oleks käsitletud järgmistes osades. Ent peatselt piirab Tolstoi oma teemat kitsama ajaloolise epohhiga, samuti muutub keerulisemaks romaani idee. Ajalooliste materjalide erakordne rohkus ei mahu enam traditsioonilise ajaloolise romaani raamidesse. Autor uuris hoolikalt läbi tohutu hulga 1812. aasta sündmusi käsitlevaid ajaloolisi ürikuid, memuaare, kirju.
