There are two main approaches to loudspeaker construction: enclosures, which are more or less sealed boxes containing drivers, most often electrodynamic, and panels, which are vibrating surfaces generally held in place by a frame. This latter solution may seem appealing for avoiding the coloration that would be introduced by the enclosure. Panels did, in fact, enjoy some success in the 1980s and 1990s with brands like Magnepan, Martin Logan, Apogee, and of course, Quad. However, the dipole radiation pattern of these drivers makes their placement tricky, and they appear to be less common today.

Faced with this dilemma, the prestigious firm DS Smith Packaging, drawing on its experience in cardboard packaging, has devised a bold solution that falls outside both of these approaches. To prevent the speaker's sound and the driver's output from interfering with each other, they conceived of a diffuser that radiates only through the cabinet, without any drivers.

To avoid confusing the audiophile and to allow identification of the main emitting surface, the manufacturer incorporated a subtle decorative element.

Numerous design details betray a rigorous approach that leaves nothing to chance. For example, the main emitting surface has a triangular shape designed to optimize directivity. Similarly, to avoid dipole or bipole sound emission, the SoundPax speaker does not have a flat rear panel. The triangular cross-section of the speaker ensures that the secondary radiation emitted by the passive panels does not interfere with the primary emission from the front panel, but rather helps to distribute the reflected waves throughout the listening room, thus enhancing the listener's immersive sound. One could endlessly list the details that demonstrate the flawless design of this speaker. Finally, regarding the speaker's side panels, let's simply mention the assembly of the different sides using an original, patented "folding" technique that allows for precise control of the emitted spectrum.

The triangular shape is clearly visible next to Schrödi the cat.

The triangular cross-section of the SoundPax is clearly visible. Schrödi the quantum cat is not indifferent to this high technology.

Of course, this display of high technology comes at a price, and the tech-savvy British audiophile had to spend no less than £30 in 2002 to own a pair of SoundPax speakers.

It's a wideband system. There's no filter, just a capacitor to prevent current from flowing to the exciter.

It's a wideband system. There's no filter, just a capacitor to prevent current from flowing to the exciter.

In measurements, the SoundPax speakers aren't exceptional. But we've seen worse, and for much more money (who said Rehdeko?).

The frequency response curve extends from 50Hz to 20kHz... at +/- 5dB!

The frequency response curve (in blue) extends from 45Hz to 17kHz... at +/- 5dB! The directivity is very good, as shown by the 45° curve in red.

We'll skip over the listening tests. Suffice it to say that one of the great pleasures of using SoundPax speakers is simply... discovering that they are capable of producing sound. It's hard to believe when you unpack and set them up, as they deviate so far from the usual standards of speaker manufacturing. Furthermore, the price-to-performance ratio is quite incredible, with no objectionable coloration of the sound.

The speakers are transportable in a cardboard box. They weigh only 2.5 kg.

Let's delve deeper into the technology used. Legend has it that the Defense Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA), a sort of DARPA with a mint twist, discovered the sound emitted by panels subjected to a certain type of stimulation while trying to minimize helicopter noise. Since the British military has more scruples than the Americans regarding the development of sonic weapons of mass destruction such as Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus, DERA preferred to leave this technology to hi-fi specialists. She contacted Verity Group, then owner of the Quad, Wharfedale, Mission, and Cyrus brands (no relation to Miley Cyrus). Verity created the NXT brand to exploit this technology and even sold the aforementioned brands to finance the colossal development costs of this new form of sound diffusion called "Distributed Mode Loudspeaker." Simply put, it involves using the surface of the speaker as a whole.
