SS-tankidiviis "Wiking", kus võitles vabatahtlikena 11 euroopa rahva esindajaid (nende hulgas ka eesti pataljon "Narwa", mida diviisi juhtkond väga kõrgelt hindas), alustas oma sõjateed 1941. aasta suvel Ukrainas ja lõpetas 1945. aasta mais Ukrainas. Tavaliselt paisati diviis kõige ohtlikumatesse rindelõikudesse, kus oli vaja vastase kaitsest läbi murda või siis (eriti sõja teisel poolel) katta muude väeosade taandumist. Diviisi ja selle allüksuste lahingute kõrval on rohkesti juttu ka üksikute sõjameeste ennastohverdavast vaprusest, sest nagu lausus üks diviisi veterane: "Waffen-SS-i astujatega elukindlustuslepingut ei sõlmitud".
