Raadiojaama põhiliseks tegevuseks oli kommunistlike režiimide vastane propaganda kaheksas keeles. Deutsche Welle saateid summutati külma sõja ajal NSV Liidu, Ungari ja teiste kommunistlike režiimide poolt. Sellegipoolest saavutas Deutsche Welle külma sõja lõpul oma raadiosaadete auditooriumiks välismaal 30 miljonit kuulajat. Deutsche Welle raadio on teinud ka eestikeelseid saateid.
