Ещё до того, как первые "Жигули" сошли с конвейера в 1970 году, в конструкторском бюро ВАЗа начали работу над переднеприводной моделью, не связанной с итальянской школой.
Так появился ВАЗ-Э1101 – компактный трёхдверный хэтчбек, который мог стать новым этапом в истории советского автопрома. 900-кубовый двигатель на 50 л.с., передняя подвеска "МакФерсон", передние дисковые тормоза, сцепление с тросовым приводом – всё это делало его революционным автомобилем для своего времени. Однако проект остался экспериментом, уступив место будущим переднеприводным моделям...
