Helena Blavatsky õpetas, et teosoofia ei ole ilmutus ega spekulatsioon, vaid katse järk-järgult uuesti tutvustada teosoofilises kirjanduses seni varjatud teadust nimega okultne teadus e salateadus. Blavatsky järgi kirjeldab salateadus reaalsust mitte ainult füüsilisel, vaid ka metafüüsilisel tasandil. Blavatsky sõnul on "salateadus" säilinud ja seda on praktiseerinud kogu ajaloo vältel hoolikalt valitud ja koolitatud inimesed. Ta ei pidanud oma kirjutatud õpetusi täiuslikeks, vaid nimetas teosoofia ühe eesmärgina looduse selgitamata seaduste uurimist. Ta hoiatas, et teosoofiast ei tohi teha järjekordset ususüsteemi, sest tema arvates oli pime usk kahjulik.
