Paul Liivaku eluaastad on 1900-1942. Kunstiharidustee algas 1915. aastal Tallinna Kunsttööstuskoolis, kuid pärast tutvumist Ado Vabbega jätkas ta õpinguid 1919. aastal kunstikoolis Pallas. See tegi temast legendaarse kooli ühe esimestest sisseastujatest. Ta osales õpilastööde näitustel 1920. ja 1921. aastal, kuid seejärel lahkus koolist majanduslike raskuste tõttu. Liivak jätkas kunstniku teed vabakutselisena ning 1920ndatel ja 1930ndatel lõi valdavalt tuššijoonistusi, akvarelle ning ka graafikat.
