Romaan on järg sellele eelnenud teosele "Ja taamal laulavad metsad". Ka teises raamatus jälgitakse Bjorndali metsatalu elu. Siin tõuseb tegevuse keskmesse Noor-Dag, kes abiellub Adelheidiga ning lähemalt jälgitakse nende elu – raskeid nälja-aastaid ning väikeste perepoegade surma, millele järgneb pikk lein talus. Siiski sünnivad paari aasta pärast perre taas lapsed, seekord kaksikud poisid Torgeir ning Dag, ja elu talus saab jälle uue suuna.
