Valge Laeva ootust kirjeldas esmakordselt Eduard Vilde oma romaanis «Prohvet Maltsvet». Ehkki Viktor Siilatsi raamat ega muusikal ei räägi otseselt väljarändamisest, ignoreeriti või koguni naeruvääristati seda teemat veel üsna hiljaaegu, nii nagu maltsveltlasigi omal ajal. Tänaseks päevaks on väljarändamise, aga ka sisserändamise teema Eestis vägagi aktuaalne.
