Rootsi rüütlid plaanivad ristiretke Venemaa vastu ning saadavad salakuulaja Novgorodi. Opositsioonis olevad bojaarid plaanivad mõrvata Aleksandri ja linna lahinguta käest anda. Kõigele lisaks armub vürsti parim sõber Ratmir kaunisse vürstitari ning ka temast võib saada Aleksandri verivaenlane. Vürst on küll noor, kuid elu sunnil peab ta olema vapper, diplomaatiline ning piisavalt elutark.
