Itaalia helilooja Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901), ooperi üks suuremaid vormijaid, lõi oma teosed XIX saj. keskel. Werfeli romaani tegevuse ajal – 1882/83 – oli ta oma elutöö suures osas juba lõpetanud. Sajandi suurkujuks tõusis ka Richard Wagner (1813–1883), kes esindas saksa ooperit. Kahe eri rahvusest ja erinevasse koolkonda kuulunud helilooja loomingu omapära on loomulik, ometi andis see põhjust Verdi muusika alahindamiseks, mida tundlik loojanatuur valuliselt läbi elas. Austria kirjaniku Franz Werfeli (1890–1940) "Verdi" ilmus 1924. a. Teos on ühtaegu muusikateaduslik uurimus ning vabalt loodud tegelaskonna ja pingelise sündmustikuga romaan.
