Tutvustus

«Viimane samurai» on Helen Dewitti esikromaan ja seda on juba tõlgitud rohkem kui kahekümnesse keelde. Raamat sai ilmumisel otsekohe kuulsaks ning seda peeti üheks 2000. aasta tähelepanuväärsemaks teoseks.
Raamatus räägitakse kuueaastasest imelapsest Ludost ja tema emast Sibyllast, kes elavad Londonis. Sibylla püüab masinkirjatöödega neid ära elatada, Ludo aga õpib vana-kreeka keelt, loeb Homerose teoseid ning hakkab tegelema heebrea, araabia, inuiidi ja jaapani keelega. Mõlemad, ema ja poeg, armastavad Kurosawa filmi «Seitse samuraid», mida nad vaatavad korduvalt, õppides sealt samuraidele omaseid voorusi.
Peagi hakkab Ludo otsima oma isa ning pöördub selle käigus seitsme oma alal silmapaistva mehe poole, kelle lood samuti raamatusse põimuvad.

Raamatu autor Helen Dewitt sündis 1957. aastal Takoma Pak'is, Marylandi osariigis USA-s. Ta õppis Oxfordi Ülikoolis klassikalisi keeli ja filosoofiat ning elab praegu Inglismaal.
