TUTVUSTUS
1970. aastal läheb pankrotti üks Mississippi värvikamaid kohalikke ajalehti The Ford County Times. Paljude suureks imestuseks läks ajaleht üle kahekümne kolme aastasele Willie Traynorile, kes polnud isegi kolledžit lõpetanud. Ja ajalehe tulevik tundus tõepoolest tume, kuni linnakeses vägistati ja tapeti üks noor ema. Ajaleht kajastas kõike seda ja hakkas majanduslikult kosuma. Mõrvari üle mõisteti kohut avalikul kohtuistungil ning kõigi vapustuseks ähvardas ta iga vandekohtunikuga eraldi arved õiendada, kui ta süüdi mõistetakse. Just seda vandekohus tegigi ning talle määrati eluaegne vanglakaristus. Üheksa aastat hiljem on mõrtsukas aga siiski vaba. Ta pöördub tagasi Ford Countysse ja alustab kättemaksu...
