Arnold Paluteder arreteeriti 14. juunil 1941. a ja saadeti Sverdlovski oblasti Verhoturje rajooni laagrisse, kus talle määrati karistuseks 10 aastat kinnipidamist töö- ja paranduslaagris. 1944. a aprillis ta vabastati, kuna komisjon leidis, et süüdimõistev otsus polnud põhjendatud. Õiendi rehabiliteerimise kohta sai ta kätte aastal 1976.
Mitukümmend aastat hiljem asus ta laagrikaaslase õhutusel kirja panema mälestusi, sellest "reisist", mis kestis enam kui viis tuhat päeva.
